The best fast-growing shade plants
In an ideal world, we would all be able to plant our gardens in full sun. Unfortunately, that’s not everyone’s reality, and a lot of growers are limited in how much sun their gardens receive. If you have a shady plot, don’t despair! There are plenty of shade-tolerant flowering plants that will thrive with less than six hours of direct sunlight a day.
At Eden Brothers, we are committed to helping you troubleshoot your garden problems. Don’t let shade be an obstacle to the garden of your dreams–work with your natural lighting to grow gorgeous shade-tolerant flowers. We provide you with the highest quality flower bulbs and seeds to fit your unique needs, so that your garden is guaranteed to be a success.
All of these flower bulbs and seeds will do as well in partial shade as they would in full sun–and some may do even better! Siberian irises are just one of the many fast-growing shade plants that double as an effective groundcover.
Shade flowers for pots and patios
Hostas and coleus might be the most well-known decorative plants that tolerate partial shade–these ornamentals are grown for their colorful foliage and are popular landscaping plants.
Coleus is an excellent choice for a shady container garden, as most varieties only grow between one and three feet wide. Pair the bushier hostas with shade-tolerant flowering plants like foxgloves—the foxgloves spires will bloom well above the hostas, and when the flowers die back the hosta leaves will hide the flowers’ dead foliage.
Plant a shady wildflower meadow
If you have an area of your yard where even grass won’t grow, why not turn it over to a wildflower meadow? Eden Brothers’ exclusive Partial Shade Wildflower Seed Mix contains a blend of annual and perennial shade-tolerant wildflowers suitable for all USDA hardiness zones.
Wildflower seeds are so easy to plant–after all danger of spring frost, simply scatter the wildflower seeds over the area and press the seeds gently into the soil. Water the seeds occasionally and your wildflower meadow will thrive, so long as the area gets at least four hours of sun a day.
Low-maintenance perennials for shade
Lilies are another favorite for shade gardens. These gorgeous flowers are incredibly low-maintenance and aren’t too picky about soil type or location. Lilies actually prefer some midday shade and protection from the scorching afternoon sun, especially in hot climates.
Can’t decide which lilies to plant? The 60 Days of Lilies - Long Lasting Lilies mix is an excellent sampler of the finest lilies that are just perfect for any shade garden. The various varieties in this mix flower at different times, resulting in two months (or more!) of fragrant, colorful blooms.
Just because you have a shaded area of your garden doesn’t mean that you can’t fill the area with color. There are a number of shade-tolerant flowering bulbs and seeds that perform just as well in partial shade as in full sun. In fact, some of these plants prefer the shade!
These plants are a little more sensitive to sunlight, so be sure to tuck them into your garden well before summer and the heat that comes with it. Order your shade-tolerant flower bulbs and seeds today before they sell out!
