Collection: Freesia Bulbs

While most people will plant freesia bulbs in spring, folks living in zones 9 through 12 can plant these gems in fall. These trumpet-shaped flowers open first at the base and unfurl all the way up the stem, releasing a sweet, signature scent that people and pollinators love. Like so many bulbs, freesia flowers create a gorgeous cut flower arrangement, but they are equally as divine growing in your garden. Pair freesia and ranunculus together for a mix of fragrant summer-blooming beauties you won’t be able to get enough of!

GROW AND GIFT THE BEST FREESIA BULBS

There’s hardly a flower more colorful or fragrant than freesia. Ranging in color from snow white to a rich magenta, freesia bulbs grow one to two feet tall and display their color in multiple trumpet-shaped flowers atop straight stems with sword-like foliage. Freesias are known to symbolize purity and youthful innocence and have been historically gifted at births, christenings, and even weddings.

At Eden Brothers, we’ve made a commitment to acquire our flower bulbs from the highest-quality sources available. We know how important your garden is to you, and so we strive to provide premier freesia bulbs that are sure to bring joy to you and yours. We take all of the guesswork out of planting–we wait to ship your freesia bulbs until the appropriate planting time in your growing zone, so all you have to worry about is getting these beauties in the ground.

PLANT GORGEOUS FREESIA BULBS IN SPRING OR FALL

Native to South Africa, freesias aren’t frost-tolerant and must be spring-planted in USDA hardiness zones 8 and below. In areas with mild winters–hardiness zone 9 and above–freesia bulbs can be planted in autumn, several weeks before the first fall frost.

Spring-planted freesia bulbs must be lifted at the end of the season–cut back the plants to the ground and dig up the corms before the first fall frost. Allow the corms to dry in a cool, dark place through the winter, and they’ll be ready for replanting the following spring.

Choose a well-draining planting site for your freesia bulbs, and be sure to amend the soil with compost for the biggest and brightest blooms. You can mulch your fall-planted freesia bulbs for a little extra protection through the winter.

GROW GREAT FREESIA BULBS INDOORS AND IN CONTAINERS

Freesias are equally as much at home in containers as in the garden, and many growers take their freesia bulbs inside for blooms year-round! Freesias are among the easier bulbs to force–just bring your freesia bulbs indoors and place them in a sunny room or window. Water regularly and your freesia bulbs will flower in three months.

While the majority of flowering plants need full sun to bloom, freesia bulbs can tolerate partial shade and still put on a powerful display. As sweet-smelling as freesias smell, neither deer nor rabbit prefers their taste, so this is one planting you won’t have to worry about.

CHOOSE FROM OUR FAVORITE FREESIA VARIETIES

Do you prefer pretty pastels or more vibrant hues? Double Mix is an exquisite collection of bright, multicolored flowers that bloom in pairs. Or plant the subtle Pastel Mix for muted color and citrusy fragrance. Perhaps the most elegant freesia mix is Spring Rain, a simple blend of cream, lilac, and gold that will elevate any dining room table.
