The best poppy flower seed mixes to grow today

We completely understand your obsession with poppies—we’re enthralled by them, too. What’s not to love about the classic garden flowers? True poppies are in the genus Papaver, but we’ve grouped California poppies in this collection too for their close relation to true poppies.

As a genus, Papaver are incredibly hardy plants—Iceland poppies are native to subpolar regions, and though Oriental poppies prefer more temperate climates, all poppies are generally cool-season crops that don’t tolerate heat too well.

Well-draining soil is essential for growing any kind of poppy—California, Iceland, or otherwise. The plants don’t like to sit in wet soil, so don’t plant poppies in the low-lying areas of your garden. Add sand or compost to your native soil to improve drainage, but don’t add fertilizer, as it can be too much for poppy plants.

Poppies are an excellent choice for container gardens, so long as the pots have good drainage and you allow the soil to dry out between waterings.

Poppy flower seed mixes for all hardiness zones

Just because poppies struggle in hot temperatures doesn’t mean that southern gardeners can’t enjoy poppies too! If you live in a warmer climate, plant poppies in an area of your garden that gets some protection from the afternoon sun. Poppies prefer the much cooler morning and afternoon sun to the scorching midday sun. You might also consider planting poppies in pots so that you can move the plants to a cooler area of your garden or patio if need be.

While we love the papery-petaled flowers in all hues of cream, pink, and red, the best thing about poppies are the quirky seedpods that they leave behind. Poppy seed pods add texture and interest to flower bouquets, and are perfect for dried arrangements, too.

Easy-to-grow poppy flower seed mixes

At Eden Brothers, we sell poppy seeds and poppy rootstock. Poppies are incredible easy to grow from seed, and most varieties can be started in spring or fall for the best results. California poppies are self-seeding annuals, while most Papaver species can be grown as annuals or perennials. Double Mixed Peony Poppy Mix and Angel’s Choir Mix are annual Papaver varieties.

Some poppies can be carefully started indoors, but due to their delicate taproots most varieties prefer to be direct-sown in the garden. Poppy seeds need a period of cold stratification before they’ll germinate, so either put your poppy seeds in the refrigerator for two months before a spring sowing or wait to sow the seeds after the last fall frost.
