Grow the juiciest and absolute best organic watermelon

Watermelon is the quintessential summer fruit. No family reunion, Labor Day barbeque, or weekend cookout is complete without a watermelon on the table. We all take pride in our gardens, and every harvest is worth celebrating. But can you imagine the feeling of bringing your very own home-grown melon to the next family picnic?

Some gardeners are put off from growing organic watermelons because they do require warm weather, full sun, and take several months to produce fruit. This warm-season vining annual is hardy in zones 3 through 10, but starting organic watermelon seed indoors is a good way to get a headstart on the growing season in cooler climates. Organic watermelons prefer full sun and they do take a decent amount of water, but with the help of greenhouse plastic gardeners in all regions can reap the reward of home-grown melons.

How to plant organic watermelon seeds

Organic watermelon can be direct-seeded three weeks after the last frost. Watermelons need up to 90 days to mature, so if you have a short growing season you may want to start watermelon seeds indoors and transplant them outside three weeks after the last frost. Wait until the soil is at least 70°F before seeding or transplanting. Organic watermelon is a heavy feeder and requires rich soil. Plant three to four watermelon seeds in mounds mixed with compost, sand, and organic fertilizer, and thin to two seedlings when the plants have two sets of true leaves.

Organic watermelon is healthy snack

Whether you prefer to eat your watermelon by the slice, blended into a smoothie, or in a refreshing fruit salad, organic watermelon is a great snack to keep you hydrated and healthy! Watermelon is a low-calorie food full of vitamins and nutrients. Plus, the antioxidants in organic watermelon promote cardiovascular health and fight inflammation.

Grow your own organic watermelon from seed and you won’t have to sort through overpriced, unripe store-bought watermelons again. Organic watermelons are easy to grow, they just require space. Eden Brothers has four organic watermelon varieties to choose from, some bred to be compact, extra sweet, or disease resistant.
