    This growing season was brutal, the hottest on record, and there were days I neglected the seedlings, so some didn't germinate, and then I lost a few. The attached photos show the modest result, in the colors I was hoping for, but, at first glance, the blooms look more ragged than exotic. I love them. Still, in my exploration of all things coreopsis (being pet safe, for instance), I was pleasantly surprised, as I had not labeled what these were, and forgot. ;) I will buy more of these seeds. Anyone seeking a more predictable outcome might want to focus on perennial lance-leaf coreopsis, which has survived well and seems to self-seed better in this high desert environment. The lance-leaf has propagated downhill from its original bed, but was started around 2008 from local nursery stock. I included a (fuzzy) night photo of the lance-leaf to bolster the notion that some bees actually do overnight in a flower, which is cool as a meme, but I had never actually seen it myself until this summer. These are the kinds of small victories and amazing discoveries that fuel my continued efforts. Be sure to research the right questions about grower practices, since neonicotinoids and antifungal treatments are detrimental to the survival of bees.
