For biennial hollyhocks in Zone 8, I’d recommend direct sowing in late summer to early fall when temperatures begin cooling, or sowing in early spring. Fall sowing is especially useful for biennial varieties because it gives them time to establish a leafy rosette before winter, with flowering generally occurring the following growing season. They also need light to germinate, so planting too deeply can cause issues. Also be careful not to allow the newly planted seeds to dry out, while they are getting established. Hollyhocks can sometimes be a bit particular and generally germinate best when sown just below the soil surface or lightly pressed in, as they need light to sprout and planting too deeply can prevent emergence. In cooler climates like Zone 5, starting indoors with consistent moisture, and good light can help improve results. Germination can take 10–21 days or sometimes longer, so keeping the soil evenly moist is key. We’re glad we were able to provide a resolution and appreciate you giving them a try.
