What we love about a deer resistant garden
- Minimize deer damage by planting plants with a strong scent
- Deer are unlikely to eat plants with fuzzy, velvety, and textured leaves
- Oriental poppies are toxic to deer and they instinctively stay away
- A lush, thriving garden can be had by making smart choices
You should plant ornamental plants and shrubs in your garden to delight the eyes, not to attract deer. There is nothing more disheartening than walking into the garden to find that deer have devoured your favorite plants. And while there is no way to make your garden completely deer-proof, you can minimize the damage they do by planting plants they dislike. Some plants have toxicity which causes deer to avoid them. Also, deer avoid flowers with strong odors, resisting many herbs and flowers which we think smell delightful. For a natural, meadow look, we offer our Deer Resistant Wildflower Mix. Deer-resistant perennials include ranunculus, papaver, and peonies. What a deer will and won’t eat changes by season, region and plant variety, so you may need to do some experimentation.
