The Poppy somniferum Double Black is a beautiful annual variety of Poppy Flower Seeds. The rich color, deep purple almost back, is offset by the large, frilly, double-petaled head. This hearty poppy seed is valued for its architectural pepper-pot shaped seed pod that will self-seed in your flower bed for additional seasons of color.

  • • Annual; Stunning dark purple blooms
  • • Beautiful, fully double blooms resemble peonies
  • • Poppy seeds require a cool period of 2-4 weeks to break dormancy, and some gardeners choose to cold stratify their seeds.

Customer photo review of Poppy Seeds - Double Black

None of these are as full as pictured. Like at all. The only saving grace is that I had a white poppy bloom. (It also wasn’t double bloomed)

Store owner replied: Hello Hal. Thank you for your review. We are sorry to hear that your Double Black Poppies did not produce the full, double blooms you were expecting. We've shared your report with our Quality Control team for further investigation. We also reached out by email but haven't heard back yet. We'd still love the opportunity to help, so please reply to our original email, and we'll be happy to discuss the resolution options available to you. We sincerely apologize for your experience. I was excited for the double black peonies to bloom. But what bloomed was not what it was supposed to be.

Customer photo review of Poppy Seeds - Double Black

I direct seeded these poppies in October 2024 and they are now blooming in May 2025 (zone 8b, Georgia, full sun). Some are like the photos and some are a similar color but not compound blooms! They are VERY tall, probably closer to 40” so next time I will plant them at the back of my bed and stake them up.

    Poppy Seeds - Double Black

I purchased three different poppy seeds. Followed pkt instructions. Not a single seedling or bloom. No response to two emails I sent about this. Deeply disappointing experience. Will never purchase from them again.

    Poppy Seeds - Double Black

Store owner replied: Hello Sanjam. Thank you for your review. We're very sorry to hear that none of your poppy seeds germinated, and we understand how disappointing that must have been. We also sincerely apologize for the delay in responding to your emails. Your inquiry came in during the busiest part of our spring gardening season, when our small Customer Care team was assisting an unusually high volume of customers. While that helps explain the delay, we know it doesn't excuse it, and we never want our customers to feel unheard. We are glad we were able to connect with you and provide a resolution that you were happy with. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to make things right, and we truly appreciate your feedback. We hope you'll enjoy much better success in your garden in the seasons ahead!

    None of my seeds germinated

    Poppy Seeds - Double Black

Store owner replied: Hello Vero. Thank you again for sharing your experience. We’re sorry to hear your poppy seeds did not germinate as expected! Poppies can be particular, often preferring direct sowing in cool soil with light surface coverage, as they require light to germinate and do not transplant well. That said, we completely understand how disappointing it is when results fall short. We’re glad we were able to connect with you and provide a resolution, and we truly value the chance to continue serving you better moving forward!
