Not to be confused with 80's nostalgia, the Night Rider is a new specialty lily that has made a big splash in the gardening community. A cross between Asiatic and trumpet lilies, these flowers are described as being "violet black" in the sunlight, but in light shade appear as nearly black. They grow to be about four feet tall, but once settled they can grow a little taller. Try them in a goth or all-black garden for something different!

Unfortunately, my experience was similar to the others here. I ordered these for an all black garden and they've all bloomed bright red.

I wish I had looked at review pictures before I ordered these. They are very pretty but not nearly as dark as the picture imply. I understand soil conditions and temperatures makes a difference but I would have liked to have seen various color versions on the listing. They are beautiful but I have similar colors already.

I received a healthy bulbs and the bloom beautifully but I am a little disappointed because they definitely not black.

Happy these came up and all 3 bulbs bloomed but they are not black. They are a very deep and beautiful crimson but nowhere near black

The color is beautiful but definitely not what I was expecting. I was hoping for a darker red but it was a lot brighter than expected.

I received three healthy bulbs, planed them in early April the day I received them. Watered them well. All three came up with healthy plants. They produced three flowers each. Not a single one was anywhere near black (or dark purple for that matter), They appear to be the "Black Out" red lily. Very striking in color, but nowhere near blackish color that is shown on the "Night Rider" product page.

These are not anywhere near black. The only reason I bought them was for the color. They are very pretty but mine are red. I emailed support and got no response.

    Lily Bulbs - Night Rider

Store owner replied: Hello Lisa. Thank you for your review, and we are sorry to hear that the color did not meet your expectations. While Night Rider is known for its exceptionally dark blooms, it is not a true black lily. Depending on growing conditions, sunlight, and temperature, the flowers can sometimes appear more deep burgundy or red than the near-black tones shown in photos. We also sincerely apologize for the delay in responding to your email. Your inquiry came during the busiest time of our year, when our customer service team was handling an unusually high volume of messages. While that's not an excuse, we understand how frustrating it is to feel that your concerns were not being addressed promptly. We are glad we were able to connect with you directly and provide a resolution. Thank you for bringing your experience to our attention and for giving us the opportunity to make things right. Your feedback helps us continue improving both our products and our customer service!

Do not buy if you are expecting black lilies. All three bulbs did bloom. I only bought because I thought they were going to be black.

Beautiful deep red lily. Absolutely not black as advertised.

    Lily Bulbs - Night Rider

Store owner replied: Hello Heather. Thank you again for your feedback on this lily. While this variety is known for its very deep red to near-black blooms, flower color can vary depending on growing conditions and climate. In warmer regions especially, achieving the darkest tones can be more challenging, as heat and intense sunlight may cause blooms to appear lighter. For deeper coloration, planting in a location with morning sun and some afternoon shade can help reduce fading. Keeping the soil consistently moist but well-drained and using a balanced or slightly phosphorus-rich fertilizer may also help support richer bloom color. Even with ideal care, warmer climates may naturally produce more burgundy or dark red tones compared to cooler regions, where the darker pigments tend to develop more intensely. We always stand behind our products and are here to help you grow successfully, so we truly appreciate you sharing your experience with us and allowing us to make it right with you!

The lilies grew and bloomed well in the first yera, o planted in fall 2024 . But the color is not at all black which was my reason to buy.

Customer photo review of Lily Bulbs - Night Rider

Only one of mine ever sprouted sadly. The one that did sprout got several deep red blooms, but none that resembled the black ones in the sales photos. The one that did sprout is pretty, but not what I expected. I wouldn’t order again.

Customer photo review of Lily Bulbs - Night Rider

The bulbs came in a little moldy so i was a bit constrained that they'd die before i planted them, but they rooted quite well within the first week. As for the color they're definitely not black but a beautiful deep red almost maroon color which is no problem i personally loved it.

    Lily Bulbs - Night Rider

All three bloomed with two flowers each plant. Not black or even dark purple, they were a lighter burgundy color.

    Lily Bulbs - Night Rider

I know that they will multiply and I am excited for that. They were planted late this spring and 4 out of 6 produced 1 beautiful flower. I loved the color. It was slightly more purple, but it is most likely due to the GA clay that I have been trying to amend.

    Lily Bulbs - Night Rider

Beautiful lily. Bulbs arrived in good condition and came up just fine, it's flowering now and it's a striking addition to the garden! Looks a little redder in direct sunlight and closer to black otherwise. Love it.

    Lily Bulbs - Night Rider

none of these sprouted sometimes I wonder if they’re shipped after the appropriate growing season for our area

First year they were nice but after two years in the ground they’ve become ginormous with over 80 flowers! I wish I could include a picture to show off how glorious they were. Very unique foliage for lilies too!

    Lily Bulbs - Night Rider

When I plant them in the fall they come up during the winter and then we have a cold freeze and it kills them. Our weather is so unpredictable we gave lots of warm weather during the winter then one day are two it gets below freeze and they all freeze I have much better luck when planted in the spring

    Lily Bulbs - Night Rider

These are absolutely gorgeous but, the photos look black. They are a very deep/dark red. It's no problem for me because they stand out in my garden. Just be aware. You can see the photos of my flowers from eden brothers on ig. Gothish_plants The quality of their products are amazing and their customer service is great as well.
