Why Tree Peonies Are So Special
- Woody stems support spectacular, oversized blooms
- Elegant architectural presence in the garden
- Exceptional lifespan of 50 to 100 years
- A collector's dream
What is the difference between Herbaceous, Itoh, and Tree Peonies?
Tree Peonies are not true trees, but elegant woody shrubs prized for their spectacular spring display. Blooming in mid-spring, they flower before Herbaceous and Itoh Peonies, bringing color and grandeur to the garden. Blooming time is an awaited for event, and we think few other plants can rival their beauty.
Unlike Herbaceous and Itoh Peonies, Tree Peonies retain their woody framework throughout winter. Their stems remain above ground year-round, sending out new growth each spring from existing branches. As a result, they require very little pruning beyond the occasional removal of dead wood or light shaping. Deeply divided foliage emerges with the flowers and remains attractive throughout the growing season, providing texture and structure long after the blooms have faded.
Exceptionally long-lived, Tree Peonies can thrive for generations when planted in the right location. They perform best in well-drained soil with morning sun and protection from intense afternoon heat. In southern climates and warmer areas of Zone 9, afternoon shade is essential for maintaining healthy foliage and preserving flower quality. Given proper care, Tree Peonies become increasingly beautiful with age, rewarding gardeners with larger plants and more abundant blooms year after year.
Collecting Tree Peonies
Tree Peonies offer a rare opportunity to bring true distinction to the landscape. More than seasonal flowers, they are living heirlooms. Tree peonies lend permanence, artistry, and quiet luxury to the garden.
Curating a collection of Tree Peonies is a gardener’s dream. Each variety offers its own personality through flower form, color, fragrance, and presence, allowing gardeners to build a collection that feels deeply personal and refined. Planted as specimens, along pathways, or within mixed borders, Tree Peonies deliver unmatched structure and elegance.
For the refined landscape, few plants offer the same combination of spring drama, architectural form, and long-term value. As they mature, Tree Peonies become focal points of increasing beauty, creating a garden that feels collected, intentional, and enduring.
