Containers tend to drain better and have warmer soil than in-ground garden rows–and these drier conditions are actually better for tropical annuals like peppers and eggplant.

Even deep-rooted plants like tomatoes and asparagus can be grown in containers if the pot is deep enough. Transplant deep-rooted seedlings into a ten or twenty-gallon pot between 18 and 24 inches wide to allow the plants enough space to develop an ample root system.

Keep in mind that containers dry out faster than the surface, soil, so check your pots more frequently but allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Some containers also have the added benefit of being moveable, so you can shuffle the containers around to follow the sun (or shade) throughout the day.
