Strawberry Roots (Everbearing) - Pineberry White Carolina FAQs

    What is a Pineberry?

Pineberries are actually the oldest strawberry variety and were brought from Chile to France in the 1700s. It is smaller than a common strawberry and belongs to the exact same species as regular red strawberries (Fragaria × ananassa). The Pineberry fruit is the result of cross-breeding, not genetic engineering as has been claimed by some.

What are some common problems with Pineberries?

Pineberries can experience many of the same pests and diseases as traditional strawberries, including gray mold, leaf spots, powdery mildew, spider mites, aphids, slugs, and root weevils. Proper spacing, good airflow, clean mulch, correct planting depth, and watering at soil level can help prevent problems. Remove damaged or rotting fruit promptly.

Why Isn’t My White Carolina Pineberry Producing Fruit?

Poor fruiting is often caused by inadequate pollination. Plant approximately one compatible everbearing strawberry, we suggest Fort Laramie or Quinault, for every five White Carolina Pineberries. Other causes include insufficient sun, excessive nitrogen or runners, extreme heat, drought, poor pollinator activity, or a crown planted too deeply.

What is the difference between a pineberry and a strawberry?

A pineberry is a type of strawberry, not a separate fruit. The main differences are its appearance and flavor: pineberries typically have white to pale pink fruit with red seeds and a sweet-tart flavor often described as having pineapple-like notes, while traditional strawberries usually ripen red and have the familiar strawberry flavor. Botanically, pineberries and common garden strawberries are closely related and have similar growing and care requirements.
