Fall bulbs are essential to any garden—these are the rugged workhorses that overwinter and somehow still flower well before any other species. The hardy perennial bulbs are integral to the ecosystem, providing needed habitat and early sources of nectar for native pollinators.

Fortunately, fall bulbs are easy to plant as they are quick to grow. First, choose a planting location in fertile, well-draining soil. While most flowering plants require full sun to thrive, several species of fall-planted bulbs, like tulips, can tolerate some partial shade.

Dig a hole about twice as deep as the bulb is tall, and place the bulb with the pointy end facing the surface. Individual plants are beautiful, but fall-planted bulbs really shine when planted in groups. Color and fragrance are more likely to pop with en mass plantings, more quickly catching your neighbor's eye and the attention of any local pollinators.

While it’s ideal to plant fall bulbs several weeks before your area’s first fall frost, you can plant some fall bulbs in early and mid-winter. Any later than that, however, and you’re better off chilling the bulbs in your refrigerator for three months and planting out in early spring.
