Planting Cover Crop Seeds
- Improves soil health
- Prevents erosion and protects bare soil
- Suppresses weeds naturally
- Enhances fertility by recycling nutrients
Build Better Soil
Cover crops are traditionally used on farms, but they can be just as valuable in home gardens. A cover crop is any crop grown primarily to protect and cover the soil, and it can later be turned into the soil to help enrich it. Planting cover crops in the garden offers many benefits, including erosion control, weed suppression, reduced soil compaction, and improved soil moisture and nutrient levels. They can also boost yield potential while attracting pollinators, supporting beneficial insects and wildlife, and even providing a food source for animals.
Help Retain and Protect Soil
Planting a cover crop is one of the simplest ways to improve soil health between growing seasons. If there is an area in the yard that is in danger of eroding, cover crops can help prevent it by shielding bare soil from wind and rain, while their roots hold soil in place and improve structure. As they grow, they suppress weeds by outcompeting them for light and nutrients, reducing the need for manual or chemical weed control.
Add Nutrients Organically
Beyond protection, cover crops actively build better soil. Many varieties, such as legumes, fix nitrogen from the air and make it available for future crops, naturally boosting fertility. When turned into the soil, they add valuable organic matter that enhances water retention, drainage, and microbial life. The result is healthier, more resilient soil that supports stronger plant growth and higher yields in the seasons that follow.
