    How to Grow Pinto Beans

Select a sunny location for growing pinto beans and plant after all threat of frost has passed. Rows should be 24” apart and plant each seed every 3” along the row, 1” deep. Water well at first, and regularly thereafter, especially when flowers set.

If it is very damp and rainy during the time the pods are maturing, pull the bean plants after most of the leaves have died and hang the plants upside down in a warm, dry location while the beans continue drying.

Optimally, pinto beans will be left in the garden to dry naturally. Open a pod and check the beans. If they are hard and you cannot dent it with your teeth, the beans are mature. Remove the beans from the shells and clean thoroughly to remove any debris. Store dried pinto beans in sealed jars or in plastic food storage bags.
