THE BEST VERBENA SEEDS FOR YOUR FLOWER AND HERB GARDENS

Need an easy-to-grow annual pollinator-attracting flower that doubles as a groundcover? Look no further than verbena. Verbena is renowned worldwide for its long-blooming, fragrant flowers with medicinal properties. Verbena contains anti-inflammatory compounds and is commonly used in folk medicine to treat gingivitis and sinus infections.

Verbena blooms have a lovely, lemony scent that is irresistible to pollinators. Rich in nectar, verbena flowers are a favorite snack among hummingbirds and humans alike–the edible florets have a subtle, citrus taste.

Whether you choose to use your verbena for cut flower arrangements, natural medicine, or as a pollinator attractor you won’t be disappointed with this gorgeous, prolific plant.

THIS VERSATILE, HALF-HARDY ANNUAL IS ATTRACTIVE TO POLLINATORS

The brightly-colored flowers of Compacta grow no more than eight inches tall and are ideal for hanging baskets, window boxes, and borders. Purple Top grows to nearly three or four feet tall and is better suited to row gardens or larger containers. The lavender-colored flowers are attractive to Tiger Swallowtail butterflies and other beneficial insects.

Verbena is considered an annual flower in hardiness zones 7 and below, but in warmer climates verbena will grow as a perennial. Regardless of how cold your winters are, expect verbena to reseed and multiply year after year. A prolific plant, verbena is prone to spread so confine it to a container if you don’t want the herb to overrun your garden.

GROW GORGEOUS VERBENA IN FULL SUN FOR LONG-LASTING BLOOMS

Verbena seeds can be directly sown in the garden after your area’s last spring frost, or you can start the seeds indoors six weeks prior to jumpstart the season. Like most wildflowers, verbena isn’t overly picky about soil type–so long as the ground doesn’t hold water, verbena will happily take root and flourish.

Verbena thrives in full sun, so choose a planting location that sees at least six hours of direct sunlight each day. Water and weed the young plants, but once established verbena is fairly heat and drought-tolerant, so you can rest easy during the hottest days of summer.

Verbena is treasured for its long-lived flowers that bloom from midsummer until frost. Pinch young seedlings by removing the central stem when the seedlings are six inches tall, forcing the plant to have a bushier growth habit and produce more flowers. Deadhead spent flowers periodically to ensure that your verbena plants bloom to their full potential.
