When to plant fall perennials

Aim to plant your perennials as soon as you receive them in the mail. If you have to wait, keep your bare rootstock in a cool, dry location until you can plant. Each fall perennial has slightly different planting instructions, so reference the different planting guides for your specific perennial before planting. A good rule of (green) thumb is to dig a hole as deep as the rootball and twice as wide. Add a handful of compost to the hole, and a slow-release balanced fertilizer. Transfer the perennial rootball to the hole, and add soil until the hole is level with the surrounding soil. Water in the roots, and by spring you’ll see signs of new growth.
