Ornamental Cabbages provide cool-season color

Decorative vegetables like ornamental cabbage, when planted in containers with other flowers, adds texture to living arrangements. This hybrid boasts striking purple and white rosette centers surrounded by green foliage. A Brassica through and through, ornamental cabbage doesn’t tolerate summer heat but thrives in the shoulder seasons of spring and fall. Direct sow seeds in early spring for summer color or start seeds in midsummer for striking fall color.

Grow Ornamental Peppers for Pollinators

If you’ve always been mesmerized by pepper plants, then you need to grow ornamental peppers in your garden. These compact, bushy plants are perfect for container gardens and will thrive in either full sun or part shade. The branching stems adorned with miniature peppers add intrigue and interest to bouquets.

A hardy annual, ornamental peppers thrive in all USDA hardiness zones and are fairly drought tolerant. You might be tempted to cook with the colorful fruits, and while these tiny peppers are edible, they are typically very hot!
