The best-tasting and fastest-growing sweet pepper varieties

If you're a collector of heirlooms, you'll love the Golden Cal Wonder, the buttery-hued counterpart to the popular open-pollinated California Wonder that ripens from green to red. Golden Cal wonder thrives in colder northern regions, thriving in USDA hardiness zones 4-10.

Sweet peppers aren't just limited to the bell-shaped varieties—add another heirloom sweet pepper to your collection, the Sweet Chocolate Sweet Pepper. Originating from New Hampshire, Sweet Chocolate tolerates cooler temperatures and shorter growing seasons better than most.

For a classic green bell pepper, it's hard to beat Emerald Giant. A productive variety known for its crisp fruit and sweet flavor, Emerald Giant ripens from green to red and can be enjoyed in either stage. For a wider range of color, try Rainbow Bell Blend. Green fruits ripen to yellow, orange, red, purple and chocolate.

Organic sweet and bell peppers are easy to grow

There's never been a better time to grow your own sweet peppers at home, and organic bell peppers aren't difficult to grow from seed. Since organic bell peppers are slow to germinate, they do best started indoors rather than direct sown in the garden. Seed three pepper plants per cell or pot, and thin down to two seedlings that will be transplanted out as one.

Wait to transplant organic pepper seeds until the soil has warmed up to at least 65 degrees, typically a few weeks after your area's last frost date. Be sure to harden off the pepper seedlings by introducing them to outdoor temperatures and direct sunlight before transplanting them in the garden, placing each pair at least eighteen inches apart.

Choose a planting site for your organic pepper seedlings that receives full sun, at least six hours of direct sunlight a day. Mulch the base of the plants to suppress weeds and retain moisture.

If you're tired of bland, storebought sweet peppers you're not alone. Forgo overpriced bell peppers and grow your own for a fraction of the price—without sacrificing flavor.
