Planting the best heirloom foxglove at home

Heirloom foxglove, also known as Digitalis purpurea in botanical terms, is a striking flower that originated in Europe. However, foxglove has expanded significantly in North America over time. Plant this lovely tall antique bloom in a part-shade location where moisture retention is abundant. The plant will require more afternoon shade as the summer progresses. Children and dogs should be kept away from heirloom foxglove since all parts of the plant can be harmful if ingested.

How to sow heirloom foxglove seeds

After the fear of frost has passed, sow your heirloom foxglove seeds directly into the garden. Or start your seedlings inside 8 to 10 weeks before the last frost date. These flowers thrive in full light, but will tolerate a little shade if required. In hotter climates, some shade is preferable. Because heirloom foxglove plants are vulnerable to strong winds, choose your planting location carefully. Foxglove loves soil that is rich, loamy, and drains well. You may also add compost to the soil to improve its quality.

Wet the surface and place your heirloom foxglove seeds on the top of the soil, gently pressing them down. Because these seeds need sunshine to sprout, don't cover them with dirt. Thin your seedlings to every 12 to 18 inches after they have two or more leaves.

Mulch around the base of the heirloom foxglove plants once they've been established to help them retain moisture. This mulch can also help to keep the roots warm during the winter. Because these plants may grow up to 60 inches tall, they may need to be staked. If you want your heirloom foxglove plants to come back year after year, don't deadhead the blooms as they start to fade.
