Forget-me-nots, also known as Myosotis sylvatica, are spreading wildflowers that grow to be moderately tall. The radially symmetrical blooms are usually powder blue with bright yellow centers, although other colors such as white and pink are also common. Along the length of their branches, these flowers are grouped in rounded, diverging clusters. where to plant forget-me-not seeds

Popular in gardens, forget-me-not seeds prefer to be planted in moist habitats. Partially shaded, wooded areas allow for it to naturalize, and give this plant the moisture retention needed for optimum performance. If you have a shady pond or bog area in need of landscaping, use this moisture loving flower there. As the name suggests, forget-me-not seeds symbolize that those who have died may be gone, but are never forgotten.

This low-maintenance plant is perfect for beds and borders, rock gardens, containers, banks, and underneath shrubbery. Forget-me-nots are generally pest-free, as they are both deer and rabbit resistant.

starting your forget-me-not seeds

Direct sow your seeds after the threat of frost has passed, preferably in mid-summer for best blossoming results. These flowers perform best in shaded conditions, but will tolerate some sunlight. Choose a planting site with well-worked and well-draining soil, amending the soil with plenty of compost. Water your planting site and lightly rake before scattering the seeds on the surface of the soil. Cover seeds with cardboard to block out light during germination. After a few days, remove the cardboard and mist the area with a spray bottle of water.

forget-me-not care

These blooms prefer a chilling period before producing flowers, which will likely be after their first year. Forget-me-not plants typically grow to be about six to twelve inches in height and 24 inches wide. After flowering, the entire plant will likely die back. Allow the debris to remain until fall, so the plant will naturally reseed itself, bringing you continuous returns of your forget-me-not blooms. Be sure there is enough space in your garden, as forget-me-nots tend to propagate rapidly and can spread. To avoid this, remove the debris of the plant after the end of the season, storing the fallen seed for intentional planting the following season.

A few companion plants to forget-me-nots include hostas and tulips. We also recommend planting these flowers near your vegetable garden, as they are wonderful pollinator attractors.
