the basics and benefits of growing candytuft flowers

Candytuft seeds grow best if they are placed directly in the sun. These flowers are not only pollinator magnets, but also deer and rabbit resistant, drought resilient, and tolerant of poor soil. With little to no obstacles in your path, there's no reason not to grow candytuft in your garden this year!

Candytuft seeds can be grown indoors six to eight weeks before the frost season ends or planted immediately outside once the frost has passed. Seeds should be put in the soil around 1/4 inch deep. If you're growing candytuft flowers inside, keep in mind that they require good drainage. Cover the indoor container with plastic and remove once the seeds have germinated to maintain a steady humidity level (16 to 20 days). If planting directly, space seeds eight to ten inches apart.

After planting, moisten the top layer of soil with a water-filled spray bottle to prevent seeds from becoming dislodged. Water plants on a regular basis to help them establish themselves. After establishing itself, candytuft can tolerate drought. Shear back plants by 1/3 to 1/2 inch after they've bloomed to keep them looking attractive and stimulate additional flowering. If your candytuft flowers aren't blooming, consider how much sun they are getting. They enjoy full to partial sunlight, with too little sunlight leading in wilted foliage and poor flowering.

where to place candytuft in your garden

Candytuft is a low-growing flower used as a pathway edging. Although it is a slow growth, it has been known to brighten and scent gardens and roads for years after seeding. Candytuft looks great when planted alone or in a group with catmint, yarrow, and/or phlox.

If you wish to collect newly created candytuft seeds from your plants, you can bag the seed heads to collect seed pods as they dry out. Break open the pods and extract the seeds before storing them, making sure they are clean and dry. If you wish to relocate your candytuft plants, do it after the blooming season has ended in the fall.
