How to Plant Basket of Gold Alyssum
When to Plant Alyssum Seeds
Plant outdoors directly after the last frost of the season or start indoors 5-6 weeks before last frost.
Where to Plant Alyssum Seeds
Plant in full sun where available (6-8 hours of sun per day), Alyssum will tolerate partial shade (4-6 hours of sun per day). Plant in well-draining, acidic soils. Alyssum is tolerant of rocky and sandy soils. Grows well on slopes and in rocky garden environments that may not suitable for other landscape plants.
How to Plant Alyssum Seeds
Lightly press 4-8 seeds into the surface of the soil no deeper than a 1/8th of an inch. Seeds should not be buried, as exposing seeds to sunlight is needed for germination. Alyssum is a spreading plant, keep 6-8 inches apart for best results.
How to Care for Alyssum
Alyssum is a low-maintenance plant. Water sparingly but deeply. Alyssum roots do best when allowed to dry out a bit between waterings, particularly in a partial shade environment. Consistently damp or soggy soil will make the plant prone to root rot. Particularly hot summers may require more frequent watering as needed. Light pruning and deadheading of the plant can allow for an additional flush of bloom throughout the season. Despite being annuals, Alyssum will self-sow and return each year.
