Cover Crop Seeds

The health of any garden begins with the health of its soil. Sunlight and water are essential, but without nutrient-rich, biologically active soil, plants cannot truly thrive. When the soil is lacking, even the best growing conditions can only do so much, and the garden will ultimately struggle. Cover crops are a simple, powerful way to improve and protect your soil between growing seasons. These hardworking plants help prevent erosion, suppress weeds, and add valuable organic matter that improves soil structure and fertility. Many cover crops also fix nitrogen or recycle nutrients, making these more available in the soil for future plantings. By planting a cover crop, you’re building healthier, more resilient soil that supports stronger growth and better yields year after year.

Build Better Soil

Cover crops are traditionally used on farms, but they can be just as valuable in home gardens. A cover crop is any crop grown primarily to protect and cover the soil, and it can later be turned into the soil to help enrich it. Planting cover crops in the garden offers many benefits, including erosion control, weed suppression, reduced soil compaction, and improved soil moisture and nutrient levels. They can also boost yield potential while attracting pollinators, supporting beneficial insects and wildlife, and even providing a food source for animals.

Help Retain and Protect Soil

Planting a cover crop is one of the simplest ways to improve soil health between growing seasons. If there is an area in the yard that is in danger of eroding, cover crops can help prevent it by shielding bare soil from wind and rain, while their roots hold soil in place and improve structure. As they grow, they suppress weeds by outcompeting them for light and nutrients, reducing the need for manual or chemical weed control.

Add Nutrients Organically

Beyond protection, cover crops actively build better soil. Many varieties, such as legumes, fix nitrogen from the air and make it available for future crops, naturally boosting fertility. When turned into the soil, they add valuable organic matter that enhances water retention, drainage, and microbial life. The result is healthier, more resilient soil that supports stronger plant growth and higher yields in the seasons that follow.

The word clover might bring to mind leafy lawns and good luck charms, but Prairie Clover more closely resembles lavender than anything else. Beets should be thoroughly cleaned and scrubbed with a stiff brush. Sugar beets should then be cubed or shredded with a food processor, then boiled in a large pot with just enough water to cover the beet material. Boiling the beets for about 1 hour will extract the sugar and beet material should be mushy, boiling times may vary based on the size of your cubes and toughness of the beets. Once boiled down, beet pulp should be strained from the liquid through a cheesecloth. Beet pulp can be wrung in the cheese cloth to get the maximum amount of moisture out of the pulp. Sometimes double straining may be necessary to make sure all beet pulp is removed from the liquid--this is necessary or your finished product will not store well. The remaining liquid now needs to be boiled again and reduced down to your desired viscosity. Liquid can be boiled all the way down until crystals form, but reducing to a kind of syrup can also be effective. This process of reducing can take several hours, depending on how much liquid you started with and the starting sugar content of your crop.

With its aggressively quick start, germination in just three to five days and growing leaves up to three inches long in just two weeks, Buckwheat is your choice of cover crop to smother those warm-season annual weeds.
