Harvest the best organic spinach this year

Since the early 19th century, when it was introduced from Europe, organic spinach has been a garden favorite in the United States. This champion green can be used in almost every recipe, from salad to pizza and everything in between, and it's even healthier cooked than fresh. Because organic spinach loses nutrients fast when stored in the refrigerator, growing it yourself is the best way to reap the full advantages. Enjoy it even in the heat of summer by freezing it while it's still fresh.

Growing conditions for organic spinach

Direct sow your organic spinach seeds in loose, fertile soil as soon as the soil thaws in the spring. Plant every ten days or so till the weather warms up enough for spinach in the spring. A second cycle of organic spinach can be sown in late summer or early fall in mild locations, and plants can be grown in cold frames long into the winter. For milder climates, sow in the shadow of taller plants like Eden Brothers' Blue Lake FM1K Bean Seeds or Rattlesnake Pole Bean Seeds (which offer the nitrogen organic spinach need) or any of Eden Brothers' corn types to lengthen the spring crop.

Companion plants for organic spinach

Grow nasturtiums and celery or leeks near your organic spinach to repel and distract aphids and to add some color to your vegetable plot. To keep weeds at bay, don't overcrowd the plants and mulch around the roots.

In as little as six weeks, organic spinach leaves can be harvested. Cut or pluck leaves from the outer ring inward for a cut-and-come-again plant, or cut the entire plant off at the base. Salads with young, tender leaves are delicious, but soups, sautes, and stir-fries with older leaves are best. On National Spinach Day, May 26th, add organic spinach to a few dishes or create a spinach smorgasbord for yourself. Choose from flat or curly-leaved cultivars, and try Eden Brothers' All American Selections-winning Bloomsdale Long Standing Spinach Seeds for a taste of the classics!
